Monitoring Digestion 101

Monitoring Digestion 101

facilityCategory: FACILITY/SAFETY – Duration: 15 minutes – Prerequisites: None

As pet care professionals we know that pet digestion is NOT similar in function and procedure to human digestion. There are a number of differences between the two that result in different digestion processes entirely. If you don’t know about digestion time and process, exercise and food types, the effects of age and activity, you won’t be able to adequately monitor digestion. A major aspect of monitoring is the prevention of foreign body ingestion (eating something that’s not food). Like toddlers, pets have a tendency to chew anything they can get into their mouths. This becomes a serious and potentially life-threatening problem if the objects are swallowed.

Because of a wide variety of factors it becomes very difficult to predict how any one pet will digest food from day to day, let alone to make broad generalizations about every animal. Still, by effective monitoring, you can develop a keen sense for how to keep everyone in your care healthy and happy.

In this course we help you understand best practices for prevention and symptom recognition related to pet digestion.
